The Nikiski Bulldogs return seven state placers off of last years state championship team (a state champion, two runner-ups, and 4 fourths). With the loss of just three seniors and the addition of eighteen freshmen, the 1997 season looks to be very bright.

On this years team, we may have four of the top 103 pounders in the state of Alaska's 1-2-3-A division. This, along with as strong of a senior class this state has seen in quite some time, should lead to some exciting times for Kenai Peninsula wrestling fans as we try and continue to make wrestling history here at Nikiski High School.

103Jared BowlinFrBorough Champion. Untested at the state level.
Very talented and great heart and desire.
103Omar CarvajalFrVery competitive and tough for opponents to handle.
It will be a fight all year long to see which two
103 pound kids advance to the regions.
103Glen RodmanFrUndefeated throughout his middle school career. Placed many times in state freestyle and is a 2X greco-roman champion.
112Shawn JurcoFrWith an outstanding middle school folkstyle and free-style career behind Shawn, high school wrestling should fit right in to his schedule. Shawn heads a very talented group of freshmen into the 97' season.
119Chris ParkerSoRegion Champion in 96' and placed second in state at 103 as a Freshman. Outstanding work ethic and talent.
119Peter MaloneFrAnother one of the undefeated middle school wrestlers coming to join the ranks. This will be a highly competitive weight class in our own room to see who goes to regions. Quality everywhere!
119Sean SullivanSoRegional runner-up in 96' to teammate Parker. Sean finished fourth in state at 103 as Freshman. Hardnose competitor for us.
125Jason MaudalSoRegional runner-up in 96'. A Very talented multi-sport athlete and should continue to have even greater success over the next three years.
130Joe JohnsonSoBattled to finish third and qualify for the state tournament in 96'. Another one of the kids we expect to get state points from in 97'.
130Eric BreneganJrThird in Regions and state qualifier as a freshman. Sat out the 96' season and has tremendous ability and desire.
130Ralph HemphillSoFirst year wrestler and may very well be the best athlete, pound for pound, on the team. That is saying something considering the talent on this team.
135James LindermanSrReturning State champion at 130 last season. James is a 2X state placer with a unique style. As a 7th seed at state, you learn never to count anyone out. A very big heart.
140Howard CouvillonJrState qualifier in 96', Howard has progressed nicely throught he system. He is ready in 97' to make the jump to the next level.
140Henry HaneySrSeason cut short for personal reasons in 96'. Henry should continue to show his great quickness and strength in 97'.
145Abe PorterSr2X region champion and state runner-up in 96'. His desire and ability should allow him to reach even greater heights in 97'.
152Mike MillerSrMike brings to the program added leadership and talent. He had an outstanding freestyle career and wants to add high school wrestling to an already full resume'. Tremendous athlete, by mid-season he should be ready to step in and contribute.
152Eli PorterSrLooks to be one of the top prospects in his weight class in 97'. A tremendous "student of the game".
160Luke NelsonSrA 3X state qualifier. Luke placed fourth in 96' and looks to be a favorite to reach the finals in 97'
160Dan SmithJrOne of the most exciting first year wrestlers I have had the opportunity to watch in years. He will be ready to move to the next level this season.
160John KassikSrPlace fourth in 96' and looks to have a great shot at moving to the next level within this weight class in 97'.
171Luke HulienSr2X state qualifier. As in 96', Luke is considered by many to be the heart and soul of this team. It will be his leadership in the room that will push us to the top once again.
189Bill GlennSrState qualifier in 96'. Was ranked int he top three at 189 through the second half of the season. Bill should make a strong run at a state title in 97'.
189Calvin LundySoTremendous talent as a freshman. Competition from his own teammates kept Calvin from making his mark at the state meet.
215Joe NelsonSoGot hurt the last day of practice last year. More than likely, Joe would have been a state qualifier. We look for him to step up at either 189 or 215 this year.
275Joey JonesFrJoey has worked very hard as an athlete through his middle school years. This should pay off as he continues his career here at Nikiski.
