Nikiski Bulldogs 1997 Line-Up

Updated Oct. 10, 1998

With just three seniors lost to graduation off of last seasons State Championship team and the Bulldogs returning all nine of their state placers, there is reason to smile some through the beginning of the 98' season. This years senior dominated team, will be responsible for guiding and shaping what has been considered one of the most talented group of freshmen to come into the Nikiski Bulldog practice room in its 10 years of existence.

The line-up should show better balance and experience from top to bottom than the 97' team as the season gets under way. There will be questions answered as our youngsters begin to stretch out and get the feel of championship high school wrestling.

Managers:

Sandra Porter, Sabrina Johns, Becky Parker

103 Chris McCaughey Fr Tough luck as an 8th grader but still managed to place at the borough meet. With the addition of workout partners, Chris should have a successful year.
103 Tom Lassen Fr A hard working young man determined to break into the line-up.
112 Glen Rodman Jr Returning state champion, the schools second triple crown winner in all three styles of wrestling. Great skills!
112 Wayne Aiken Fr. The tradition continues with twins in the program. Wayne, along with brother Tony, are very hard working kids and will be huge contributors in the program in the years to come.
112 Jason Gerke Fr First year wrestler this past year and had a great year. Very competitive young man.
119 Gerrad Bowlin Jr 2X state placer for the Bulldogs. He has great skills and experience for the next level.
119 Neil Fucci Fr One of the core kids coming into the program for the next wave of kids. One loss as a middle school wrestler. Great balance and skills for a freshman.
119 Devin LaBarbera Fr Very physical kid coming into the program. Had two losses throughout his middle school career. Tremendous talent.
125 Omar Carvajal Jr State placer last year at 112. With his off-season work, 98' should be a good one for Omar.
125 Chris Roofe So Tremendous multi-style wrestler. Has all of the tools to get to the next level in state.
125 Steve Calderwood Fr Won all three styles this past year as an 8th grader. Went undefeated on the year in all styles also. Should fit nicely into the line-up in 98'
125 Kyle Alexander Fr One of the reasons Calderwood had the success that he did is that he had Kyle as a workout partner. Really starting to come into his own.
125 Tony Aiken Fr The second half of the twin connection. No need to say more with energy level provided by these twins.
135 Jason Maudal Sr Tremendous talent, maybe the most talented in the room. Great technique and big match wrestler.
135 Joey Nightingale Jr Can wrestle you from anywhere on the mat. Must see to understand. Great kid, with tremendous heart!
135 James Boyce Fr Experience and desire is there. Tough weight class in his own room let alone the rest of the region or state.
140 Shawn Corn Jr 2X state placer with a title to his name in 97'. Hard-nose kid that can strike from anywhere on the mat with his technique.
140 Sean Sullivan Sr State placer two years ago, looking to get back on track with a medal during his senior year. One of the originals from the first state title team in 96'.
145 Chris Parker Sr 3X state runner-up. The heart and the glue of the three state title runs. Tremendous talent both on and off the mat.
145 Joshua Meeks So One of the most versatile kids in the room. He wrestled up and down the line-up in 97 and we are hoping to give Joshua some stability during the 98' season.
145 Mac Smitham Jr One of the programs most popular kids to watch on the mat. He gives everything every match and has become a real team and crowd favorite.
152 David Rust Fr David has grown tremendously as an athlete over the past year. His four years here should be great ones., if focused.
152 Greg Landford So Came a long way this past season as a freshman. Greg should continue to grow as the years move forward.
152 Gabe Laveguier Fr Like some of the other young kids. Gabe has continued to mature and develop his skills as an athlete first, wrestler second. These attributes are critical to this programs success. Gabe is another hard-nosed competitor and should have quite a career here at Nikiski.
152 Nigel Penhale Fr A very slick young man in his technique. With great work ethic, Nigel will be a factor within a year.
160 Ken Baker Sr First year high school wrestler last year and made it to the state meet. Should take even a bigger step this year for the Bulldogs.
171 David Johns Jr With David's off-season weight program, we only hope that he can make 171. Once there, he should do just fine as he steps up in competition.
189 Jeremy Vance Jr Jeremy has done all of the right things to put himself in a position of success in 98'. It's time for him to get after it at the next level of competition.
189 John Winters Sr First year wrestler with a lot of raw talent. Big and Physical.
215 PJ Koivisto Sr Lot of mat time for PJ. He had a great year in 97'. His bid to compete fell just short at the regional meet but should make a run to get there this year.
215 Tom Mitchell Jr Another one of the kids that sat last year due to injuries. Should be quite a competitor for the Bulldogs. We are looking forward to getting Tommy back on the mat again after the lengthy layoff.
